Lack of funds hinders physical rehabilitation work in Malanje

Malanje - Lack of funds and administrative issues hinder the assistance to former combatants and war veterans residing in Malanje, at Luanda's Neves Bendinha orthopaedic hospital, ANGOP was informed.

This was said on Thursday, in Malanje Province, by the director of the Angolan Association of Former Military Disabled People (Ammiga), António Nicolau, during a press conference, under the festivities of the 18th anniversary of the institution, September 02.

Ammiga has celebrated a contract with Luanda’s Neves Bendinha hospital for the physical rehabilitation of 15 disabled people annually, but it is not possible, due to lack of funds for transportation and accommodation.

They are identified in Malanje 180 disabled people waiting for physical rehabilitation.

Ammiga controls over 5,000 members.

Two fighters reach black belt at kickboxing competition

Luanda - The Angolan athletes Edgar Tavares and Márcio Rangel conquered the black belt at the international tournament of kickboxing, held in Santa Isabel, São Paulo state, Brazil, between August 20-23, ANGOP has learnt.

The mentioned athletes are now kickboxing instructors for conquering twice an acceptable number of medals in fighting with opponents of superior category.

Edgar Tavares, who conquered the greatest number of medals in 2009, said to the press, at Luanda 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, that this merit will serve for helping this sport grow in the country.

On his turn, Márcio Rangel said he will continue working to reach Olympic competitions and the dream of being a great master in this sport.

Environment Ministry restructures Kissama game reserve

Luanda - The Ministry of Environment will start charging licenses to tourism agents and firms that provide services at Kissama game reserve, on Thursday here announced the incumbent minister, Fátima Jardim.

The minister said that she noticed on the spot that various firms have been making commercial exploration in the region, with highlight on ourism, but without the authorisation of this organ.

To overcome the situation, the minister defended the maintenance of the natural reserves and improve the mechanisms of management, a task for which he called the collaboration of the intervening sectors, in order to avoid acts that do not meet the existing law of environmental resources.

"We have been making restructuring studies on the game reserves, not only at Kissama, but all over the country, so that they become areas of excellence, with better profit taken from bio-diversity and other existing wealth", minister Fátima Jardim said.

Kissama game reserve located in Bengo Province received in 2001 animals from Botswana and South Africa, and currently has 65 elephants, 70 zebras, 70 gnus, 14 giraffes among other kinds.

It has an area of 9,600 square kilometres.

Football team arrive in Uganda

Kampala - Angola's football team arrived in Kampala, this Friday at dawn, to play against Uganda on Saturday, ahead of the eliminatory round of the CAN-2012, ANGOP witnessed at the local airport.

The team will have a training session on Friday, at Mandela international stadium, this afternoon.

Muxima - Over 2,000 pilgrims, out of the expected 250,000, are already in the village of Muxima, Bengo province, for the pilgrimage honouring Our Lady of Muxima, September 4-5, the spokesman of the event told Angop today.

The mounting of the Altar, where the pontifical eucharistic will be addressed Sunday is fully completed as well as two central adjancent banks.

The chairman of the eucharistic celebration, the Bishop of Sumbe, Dom Benedito Roberto,is expected in the village of Muxima on Saturday, according to father Domingos Pestana.

The opening eucharistic of the pilgrimage will be celebrated by the bishop of Viana, dom Joaquim Ferreira Lopes.

Emeritus bishop of Saurimo dies

Luanda - The Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tome (CEAST) today announced the death of the Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Saurimo, Dom Pedro Marcos Ribeiro da Costa, 88, of hypertension.

Dom Ribeiro da Costa was born on October 10, 1921, in Cajicole, Malanje province and was ordained priest on January 23, 1949, having worked in various parishes, namely in the seminar of the Diocese of Malanje.

He was sorn in as general vicar of the Diocese of Malanje in 1975, elected Bishop of Saurimo on February 03, 1977, and received episcopal consecration on March 20, the same year.

On February 15, 1997, Dom Ribeiro da Costa resigned the Bishopric and was replaced by Dom Eugenio Dal Corso.

Angola/Kwanza Norte; Elephants destroy crops in Cambondo

Golungo Alto – A herd of elephants on Wednesday destroyed several hectares of crops in Cambondo commune, north central Kwanza Norte province, local administrator, Domingos Barros, told Angop today.

Mr Barros stated that the beasts had previously destroyed 126 plantations of banana, manioc and palm trees, depleting 300 families of their nourishing source and worsening food security in the region.

BES photo opens candidature to Angolan artists

Luanda - The 7th edition of BES photo prize, a joint initiative of Espírito Santo Bank and Colecção Berardo Museum, will extend, in 2011, the selection of works done by the Angolan artists.

According to the organisation, currently this is the main prize of contemporaneous art in Portugal now acquiring the international status, with a pecuniary value of 40,000 Euros.

“In 2011, the usual artists of Portuguese nationality or resident in Portugal, can join their counterparts from Brazil and the Portuguese speaking African countries (Palop)”, stressed the officials.

For the Angolan artists, he emphasised, this represents an opportunity to divulge their work beyond border.

Lack of programme hinders fund release - official

Luanda - The lack of advanced programme by the national federations seriously hinders the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MJD) in releasing the funds designed to the participation of different teams at international competitions, with the organs in charge of finances in Angola.

This was said Wednesday by the secretary general of MJD, Pedro Santos, during a press conference aimed at discussing matters related to the sports in Angola.

As example, he said, due to the delays, the Angolan federation of handball presented to the ministry its needs for 2011, while the remaining still await to do so on the eve of competitions.

The official warned that to avoid the situations of the kind in the future there will be the need to establish rigour.

On the delay recorded in the delivery of the prizes to the African champions of women handball, the title won in February this year in Egypt, the secretary general of Youth and Sports Ministry said that the funds had already been allocated, but due to the participation of more teams in different sports, has delayed of the process.

Chaired by the vice-minister Albino da Conceiçao José, the press conference also analysed aspects related to the sport growth in Angola during the 35 years of national independence.

Cutting on fuel subsides to increase social investments

Luanda – The elimination of subsidies on fuels, in course since Tuesday in the country, will improve the investments in the sectors like education, health and basic sanitation, Angop learnt Wednesday from an official source.

Commenting on the advantages of the decision, the national director of the follow-up office of macroeconomic management of the Economic Coordination Ministry, Carlos Aires da Fonseca Panzo said that the government’s goal is to continue promoting people’s well-being. ‘’The government will have more money to invest in doing these initiatives addressed to those people in need”.

The source said that through the reduction of the subsidies on these two products, the National Treasury will get finance to be channelled to the sectors of great social impact, toward better distributing of national revenue.

Police launch road prevention campaign during pilgrimage

Luanda - Two hundred fifty Traffic Police staff from Luanda and northern Bengo provinces started Thursday a road prevention and control campaign in stretches of access to Muxima locality, Bengo province.

The action is intended to secure the pilgrimage to the Our Lady Shrine of Muxima, scheduled for 4 and 5 September.

According to the National Traffic Department spokesperson, Sub inspector Angelino Sarrote, a group of members of Special Traffic Brigade (BET) will also be involved in the campaign.

Among the measures, said the spokesperson, the corporation will not allow the cargo carrying vehicle to drive passengers, and drivers should abide by 60km speed limit, next to the localities.

WHO considers negotiating cancer drugs price

Malabo – The director general of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Margaret Chan, said Wednesday in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, contacts will be held with pharmaceutical manufacturers to discuss the reduction of cancer treatment drugs prices.

This was said during the discussion of the matter related to uterine cancer in WHO African region, its current situation and perspectives, when most of addressers pointed out high prices as the main challenge in the treatment of cancer.

She added that judging from information from the countries attending the event, the situation is worrying, although its dimension is not fully known.

The official appealed for education and information, mainly within the youths as, she added, the situation has much to do with life style.

Margaret Chan said cancer is a very complex disease and requires support from partners, as the cost of treatment is too high.

The WHO official announced that a meeting on methods of coverage, prevention and treatment of cancer will take place in September this year in Uganda.

However, uterine cancer is the most frequent form of the disease and one of the main causes of women death in under-developed countries.

According to the World Health Organisation, in 2007 there were in the world more than 500,000 new cases of uterus cancer, more than 90 percent of which in developing countries.

In Africa south of Sahara, a total of 72,000 new cases were recorded, with the death of 56,000 women. Africa records strong indexes of the disease, with rates higher than 50 per 100,000.

Official augurs top positions in international competitions

Luanda– The deputy minister of Sports, Albino da Conceição admitted on Wednesday in Luanda that the country has capacity to occupy prominent places in the competitions of the zone IV (Southern Africa) of the continent and the rest of the world.

According to the official, who was speaking at a press conference held at the Stadium 11 de Novembro, more organization and proper planning is required to reach success at international arena.

He referred the basketball (male) and handball (women) as the modalities most obviously beyond the boundary were won several continental titles besides good participations in the World Cup and Olympic Games.

Albino da Conceição highlighted also the modalities of Karate Do and Teakwood with higher performance in international events.

The deputy minister encouraged private businessmen to help government in sport development just like what is happening in the other countries.

Minister stresses Integrated Technological Training Centre

Luanda, – The Angolan minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Maria Cândida Teixeira, considered Thursday in Luanda the Integrated Centre of Technological Training (Cinfotec) as a key partner in vocational training centred on technical
courses, still in need in Angola.

Maria Teixeira made these statements at the opening of workshop on “Technological Professional Training in Angola: Realities and Perspectives”, in the light of the 2nd anniversary of Cinfotec.

According to the minister, the Ministry of Public Administration, Employment and Social Security (Mapess) is committed, through Cinfotec, to the short, medium and long term technical courses, coupled with technical and professional programmes in the strategic fields of the country.

Maria Cândida Teixeira also said that the training centre is setting priority of professional training, by creating institutional conditions, human resources, aimed at stimulating to the innovation, through learning the transferring process of knowledge, for the management of the products and processes.

Cinfotec was created on 02 September, 2008.

Creation of environment management mechanism defended

Stadiums built for CAN2010 to have athletics tracks

Luanda, – The construction of athletics tracks in the stadiums of Cabinda, Benguela and Lubango begins next year to the benefit of the modality in the country, it was announced on Thursday in Luanda.

The information was given by the deputy minister for sports, Albino da Conceição José during a press conference that addressed the current moment of sport in the country.

The stadium 11 de Novembro in Luanda is the unique with an athletics track among four built for African Cup of Nations (CAN) hosted by Angola in January this year.

Other stadiums are Tundavala (Lubango), Chiaze (Cabinda) and Mombaka (Benguela).

Family Ministry, Comandante Loy consortium sign deal

Luanda, – The Ministry of Family and Women Promotion (Mifamu) and “Comandante Loy” SA Consortium will sign next Monday in Luanda an agreement on their existing partnership, based on joint implementation of housing projects in the communities.

The agreement will be signed by the incumbent Family minister Genoveva Lino, and José Domingos de Barros, for the Consortium.

A note released by the Family Ministry delivered to Angop Thursday, says that the signing of accord comes as the result of diagnosis of housing needs carried out since 2008 by the technical commissions of the institutions in the provinces of Bengo, Kwanza Sul, Benguela, Huíla, Huambo and Uíge.

The document also added that the signing of protocol of partnership between the two institutions will respond to the details of the government programme for 2009-2012 period, on the housing needs of population and the National Programme of Urbanisation and Housing.

The programme still consists of mobilising and incentive the engagement of public institutions and private agents in the improvement of restructuring and expansion of urban system.

This will also lessen the housing deficit, in order to ensure a proper residence to each family, according to their income.

The “Comandante Loy”, SA Consortium is an Angolan company founded in1998, whose shareholders are mostly former combatants and motherland veterans.

Environment technical commission meets in Luanda

Luanda, – The multisectorial technical commission on environment (CTMA) met in Luanda for the second working session to discuss its organic and legislative package.

The meeting, led by the Angolan Environment minister, Fátima Jardim, has the responsibility to elaborate the legislation projects related to environment and sustainable usage of the natural resources, speaking about strategic results of the sectorial control, controlling and using sectorial methods of environment protection.

According to the legal director of the Environment Ministry, Miranda Kiala, the multisectorial technical commission on environment, created by presidential dispatch on June 18, aims to collect ideas from diverse sectors about environment issues.

This technical commission is comprised by representatives of 14 Ministerial Departments namely Agriculture and Rural Development, Planning, Health, Culture, Social Mass Media, Education, Energy and Water, Defence and Interior.

IDA to assist rural families in agricultural season

Ondjiva – At least 91 families of peasants in the province of Cunene will be assisted in the 2010/2011 agricultural season due to start next November, Angop learnt from the chief of the department of Agrarian Development Institute (IDA), Profiro Samanehulu.

According to the official, the assistance to the families is divided into two programmes namely extension of rural development and agriculture promotion, providing an output of 72,000 tons of assorted cereals.

Profiro Samanehulu said that for the campaign there have bee prepared 175.000 hectares of land and the farmers will receive agriculture in-puts such as fertilizers, hoes, machetes and plough in the six districts of the province.

Ambassador works in Cunene

Ondjiva - The Italian ambassador to Angola, Josefe Mistreia, started Thursday a three-day official working visit to the northern Cunene province aimed at analysing with the local authorities projects related to the health project.

Josefe Mistreia, who made a stop-over in Ondjiva city Thursday, held a separate meeting with the provincial governor, António Didalelwa, and the Health’s Board of directors in Cunene.

According to the visiting programme, delivered to Angop, the Italian ambassador is expected to Ombadja district, where he will learn about the functioning of the health services in Mucope commune and Chulo hospital.

Accompanied by four members of the embassy, Josefe Mistreia is expected back to Luanda on Saturday.

The Republic of Italy is the first Western country to recognise the independence of Angola has long historic ties with the Southern African country.

End to violence a challenge to whole society - Governor

Saurimo – The governor of the north-eastern Lunda Sul Province, Cândida Narciso, said on Wednesday in Saurimo City that the high rate of violence in Angola is a challenge for the whole society, not just for the state.

The governor said so during the opening of the local journalists’ workshop on “Violence in society, inform, prevent and intervene”, which was promoted by the provincial media department.

According to her, each Angolan may contribute to construction of a more balanced and harmonious society.

The official said that in nowadays’ society, the dimension of the social problems need a serious discussion of all journalists, government officials and governors.

To her, the right use of media organs by journalists might promote the change to positive attitudes in human beings, obviously in the institutional relation of the state with the population.

The governor of Lunda Sul Province also considered the violence as a phenomenon that may be found in all societies in different ways, as well as a tough common heritage of the people in the planet.

Urban plan presented to public

Caxito – The steering development plan of city of Caxito, province of Bengo, was presented to public on Thursday in a ceremony presided by the minister of Territory Administration, Bornito de Sousa.

The plan foresees a construction of a new political, financial and administrative centre in order to develop the province.

Other aspect of the plan is the creation of several culture and scientific policies turned to farming and agro-industry, tourism and logistics as well as road infra-structure and communication.

Journalists to create ecological committee

Huambo – An ecological committee will be created, this month September, by a group of local journalists, aiming to contribute actively to people’s environment education and support government initiatives toward making Huambo city as the first ecological capital of the country.

Speaking to Angop, in Huambo, the coordinator of the creating committee commission, Filipe Olímpio, said that there would be created by environmentalists, agronomists, religious authorities and traditional authorities, as well as journalists and teachers of geography and environment study.

Boosted control helps decreasing illegal migration

Luena - The increased supervision of illegal migration in August has led to the decrease of cases through the eastern border of Luau district, Moxico province, from DR Congo, said the Border police.

According to a source attached to the Migration and Foreigners Service Department (SME) in Moxico, the institution recorded four offences, in comparison to the month of July, that reported nine cases.

The district of Luau shares border with DRC, Alto Zambeze (DRC and Zambia) and Bundas, (Zambia).

Border Police arrest citizens for illegal crossing

Ondjiva, – About 12 national and foreign citizens less six than the previous period were detained during the past seven days for attempted illegal border crossing between Angola/Namibia.

The fact was advanced by the spokesman of Provincial Command of National Police in Cunene, superintendent, Carlos dos Santos adding that the detention is a result of six violations occurred in the marks 5 and 19.

He underlined that from the group are citizens from Zambia, Mali and Gambia who after registration were taken to Cunene service of migration for appropriate treatment.

Carlos dos Santos said also that the members of the border police removed in the district of Ruacana three landmines of 81 and 60 mm.

More health experts boost Muxima Hospital

Kissama – The district hospital of Kissama will count on 100 health experts to assist patients during the pilgrimage to Our Lady of Muxima, northern Bengo province, said the health institution's director, Mieze Garcia.

Speaking to Angop in Muxima town, the official said that the 100 experts from the country's capital will be supported by 12 vehicles and two National police helicopters.

Police to deploy over 300 officers to secure pilgrimage

Kissama, - At least 350 police officers, backed up by vehicles, helicopters and other means, will be deployed in Kissama town, northern Bengo province, to reinforce the district Commando of Kissama, with a view to securing the safety of faithful during the
pilgrimage to Our Lady Shrine of Muxima.

The information was released Thursday to Angop by the provincial director of Public Order and member of preparatory commission of pilgrimage, superintendent Marques Domingos.

The yearly event gathers about 100,000 faithful from different parts of the country.
