Kuito - Thirty six tonnes of assorted explosive devices were destroyed friday by the army engineering brigade in the municipality of Kunhinga, central highland Bie privince.

The head of the engineering section of the 4th infantry division, major Afonso Bimbe, said that among the devices destroyed were AKM ammunitions, Mig-21 fighter-plane bombs, F-1and RGD-5 hand-grenades,Vougue-25 explosive projectiles, RPG-5 ,ZGU-23, ZGU-14.5 shells, anti-personnel and anti-tank landmines.  

He adde3d that those devices, some of them in out-of-date condition were taken from shell-rooms of the angolan armed forces (FAA) while the landmines were removed in the outskirts of Kuito. namely along the roadways Kuito-Kunhinga, Kuito-Chipeta and Kuito-Jimba Silili.

Major Bimbe stated the operation will allow the improvement of free flow of people amd goods and decrease the number of landmine death and mutilation related.

He said the anti-landmine brigade is now carrying up demining works along the Benguela Railway and the power line Chinguar-Kuito.
