Kuito
Lecturer backs reintegration of elderly people into families

Kuito- The real reintegration of old people in Angola should be conducted at home, unlike what happens with some family members who take them to the facilities set up by the Government, said Friday in Kuito, central Bie Province, a university professor Maria de Encarnação Pimenta.

Speaking to ANGOP, Maria de Encarnação Pimenta, who is also psychologist, condemned the attitude of those families who take their parents, at the old age, to the State-owned centres, some even after having been disposed of their possessions.

The University lecture indicates that despite the support provided by the Ministry of Social Welfare (Minars), the adults take offence at the
abandonment of their relatives.

According to the expert, the family, as the foundation of a society, should be able to take care of their elders and stop accusing them of witches, or label them senile.

On the other hand,  the psychologist stressed the need of  State, through the Ministry of Social Welfare, conduct awareness campaign within families on the best way to treat the elderly.
