New water course into Ondjiva spotted

Ondjiva - New water streams from Mui river, district of Cuvelai, southern Cunene province, a major contributor to the floods hitting the region, was detected Monday, Angop learned.

This followed a visit by a fact-finding commission coordinated by the provincial governor, António Didalelwa.

At the end of the visit, the governor said the purpose was to trace down the stream of water from Cuvelai river into Ondjiva, only to detect other courses of water from Mui river, running into the capital city.

António Didalelwa said there is need for a thorough study of the whole hydrographic basin of Cuvelai river and others existing in the region.

The provincial governor, accompanied by a team of the Civil Protection Commission, visited the five localities of Cuvelai affected by the floods, including the localities of Evale and Humbe that have recorded heavy floods.

This is the third consecutive year the province is hit by heavy rains and floods, affecting mainly the district of Cuvelai, breaking road connection with the capital city, Ondjiva.

Until now, about 12,000 people have been affected by the floods. Of those  5,805 students lost their schools, 400 agricultural fields destroyed and several houses washed away.
