Luanda– The deputy acting chairperson of the Association of Friendship and Solidarity to Third Age, Emília de Almeida, Friday in Luanda spoke of the need for a law that gives priority in serving elderly people at any public and private institution.

Speaking to Angop on the attention to the elderly in Angola, Emília de Almeida said that with such a law, old age would be respected in the country.

"Many elderly have not been attended to appropriately, both at first aid units, hospitals and other workplaces, so we should call for such a legislation, in order to protect them”, said Emília de Almeida.

 
 
To the official, public transports fares must be subsidised by the State, given their condition as retired persons.

 
She said this group of people are unprotected both from the social point of view and economic, which leads to their being abandoned by their relatives.

 
This, the official said, has been leading the elderly to a state of loneliness and psychological and emotional disorder.

 
Emília de Almeida appealed to the Government to pay more attention to the elderly, so their various difficulties get lessened, particularly concerning medical assistance.

 
She said her association has as its duty to exercise advocacy with the Government institutions in the social sphere for the revision of third age regulations and creation of leisure and other facilities for the elderly.

The creation of incentives to disfavoured people, circles of interest for study, reflection and promotion of civic, moral and historical values are other purposes of the institution.

 
The Association of Friendship and Solidarity to Third Age was established in December 2002, with headquarters in Luanda.
