Luanda
Environment Ministry unveils Planet Earth Committee

Luanda – The Ministry of Environment and its partners will officially launch on Thursday in Luanda the National Committee of the Planet Earth, with the presentation of the first material that comprises the education kit.

With the implementation of this project, the Republic of Angola, through the Ministry of Environment, fulfils one of the compromises assumed last February, at the time that the country became member of the International Committee of the Planet Earth.

With the objective of developing actions aimed at protecting the Planet Earth, the referred National Committee, according to a communiqué delivered to Angop, on Monday, will be tasked with drafting projects and activities of scientific nature, in collaboration with the “International Year of the Planet Earth’’.

For the accomplishment of the projects of the committee, the Ministry of Environment identified issues related to earth, health, climate, natural resources and energy and oceans.

These themes, according to the press release, will be integrated in the education packages, containing school materials for awareness and education campaigns within the civil society.

The educative kit will comprise a book on identified matters, activity records, booklets, CD with presentation of contents linked to the protection of the planet earth and environment data of 2010.

With the exclusive support from the Banco Espírito Santo (BESA), considered by UNESCO as the Planet Bank in 2009, fruit from its contribution to the conservation of the ‘’Planet Earth’’, the projects and the actions will be held within the public in general, aiming at creating an environment-related awareness.

The committee will count on the collaboration of the country’s scientific community, civil society and mass media bodies.

The official launching ceremony of the committee will take place at Talatona Conventions Centre, in Luanda, in an event to be attended by members of the Government, representatives of the United Nations (UN) agencies, public and private universities, NGOs and civil society.
