Malabo – Angola supports the creation of the African Fund for emergency public health aid submitted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) regional director for Africa, Luís Gomes Sambo, for debate at the body’s 60th session taking place in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
This was said to Angop by the head of the Angolan delegation to the meeting, the Health minister, José Van-Dúnem, who added the creation of the fund is opportune as the region is faced with various calamities and epidemics.
He added the fund is important as the countries of the region have poor health systems and restricted access to basic health care.
To the minister, the fund will strengthen the organisation’s capacity to respond to situations characterised by a severe shortage of resources in times of world financial and economic crisis.
However, José Van-Dúnem said a discussion should take place about details of the project, particularly concerning the amount each country should contribute.
Meanwhile, some delegations and Health ministers say the contribution and management of the fund should also be discussed.
To them, apart from covering emergency situations, the fund should also be used for prevention.
