Luanda - At least 109,376 Angolan women aged over 15 years old may be
infected with HIV/AIDS, with an estimated prevalence rate of 3.1 percent in pregnant
women..
This was disclosed by the Angolan doctor Maria Generosa when speaking on the prevention
of mother-to-child HIV/AIDS transmission, a topic that opened Friday's session, last day of
the CPLP Congress.
According to the doctor, to counter the high rate of HIV positive pregnant women, the
Angolan government began in 2004 implementing the programme for the Prevention of
Vertical Transmission, with three units in Luanda.
By 2009 the country had 178 distributed in all districts of the country.
According to Ana Genoveva, the Angolan government efforts have been focussed on the
implementation of vertical transmission programme, aware of the strategic importance of
preventing new cases and epidemic control.
Currently, the National Institute of Combat AIDS (INLS) is developing a pilot project for the
implementation of early infant diagnosis in children at risk.
