Kigali - Angolan doctor Luís Gomes Sambo was re-elected this Monday, in Kigali, Rwanda, as regional manager of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Africa, with 45 votes, among 46 possible votes, during an act attended by almost 500 delegates.
The following is Luís Gomes Sambo’s profile who ran for his own replacement:
Luís Gomes Sambo, 58, is married and was born in Lândana, Cabinda province. He is graduated in Medicine and speaks fluently Portuguese, French and English.
He works in Public Health in Africa Region for almost 30 years. He had already worked in several areas and was indicated by his country as member of the Executive Council of WHO, in 1978. After that he was indicated as health deputy minister of Angola Government from
1983-1989, at the time he became WHO worker.
He has been working for WHO in the last 20 years, four of them as representative of WHO in Guinea-Bissau, where he got deep knowledge about procedures and processes of WHO in terms of supporting the countries.
The candidate worked as manager of the programs in the WHO Regional Office for Africa during six years, being responsible by writing strategies and coordinating technical programs to support all countries of the region.
Luís Gomes Sambo worked since 2004 as regional manager, replacing Ibraim Samba.
Angola had the pleasure to indicate him as candidate for the post because of many good reasons: his view, technical qualifications, experiences, political skills, all his best in terms of sanitation development in Africa.
