820 cases of malaria diagnosed in Cunene


Namacunde – A total of 820 cases of malaria were diagnosed from January to October this year in Ciedi, district of Namacunde, southern Cunene province, killing seven people among children and adults.

 

 
The information was supplied to Angop by the head of the sector, Edvirges Hambeleleni, who added that the disease affected mainly children aged less than one year.

 

 
Comparing with the same period of 2008, he said this year’s figure indicates a drop by 30 people.

 

 
She said that in order to prevent the disease, the sector in the region has been investing in awareness and distribution of mosquito nets.

 

 
The official also appealed to the population to use the insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets thus avoiding mosquito stings that cause malaria.

 

 
Namacunde is 35 kilometres south of the provincial capital city, Ondjiva, and has a population estimated at 111,080 inhabitants, mainly traders.
