Defence minister stresses Missang experience

Luanda - The creation of the Angolan Military Mission in Guinea-Bissau (MISSANG) was a worthwhile and stimulating experience that, surely, will be retained in collective memory for many long years, said Friday the Angolan minister of National Defence, Candido Pereira Van-Dunem.

The government minister was speaking at the ceremony of reception of staff who accomplished their mission, held in the Special Forces Unit, based in Cabo Ledo, northern Bengo province.

According to the minister, Angola, in light of its spirit of solidarity and institutional aid accepted willingly to take part, through a protocol signed between the two executives, in the restructuring process of the army and security forces of Guinea -Bisseu".

The official said  that  the initiative was intended to train military and police staff in order to restore security, public and military stability in that brotherly country faced by successive coup d'etats.

He noted that despite the will showed by the legitimate government and people of Guinea-Bissau,  Missang did not achieve both its goal and the full compliance of its mission, due to the reasons beyond our control.

Candido Pereira Van-Dunem also recalled that  the protocol foresaw, among other actions, rehabilitation and construction of infrastructure to improve living and working conditions of staff of the Guinean Armed Forces and police.

Angola reiterates its support to the brotherly people of Guinea-Bissau and total willingness to continue contributing in all actions aimed at strengthening democracy and improving the quality of living standards of Guineans in general, stressed the minister.

The end of the mission in Western Africa country was marked by a ceremony of handover of MISSANG standards to the minister of national defence.

Attended  the event government officials, general and high ranking officers from the three branches of the FAA (Army, Navy and Air Force), defence attachés accredited to Angola, among other guests.
