Unita's member renounces party, creates new organisation

Luanda – The member of the Angolan main opposition party Unita, Abel Chivukuvuku Epalanga Wednesday in Luanda, announced his defection from the political organisation that he militated for over 38 years, to lead the Broad Convergence of National Salvation (Casa).

"I Abel Chivukuvuku, militate in Unita for 38 years, with regret, but also with much determination, I am forced to consciously tread a new path. Thus I cease as from today, March 14, 2012, my activism in Unita", he said at a press conference.

The politician justified on the grounds that he did not have another option due to the problems facing the current leadership of Angola’s main opposition party.

He says that he leaves it with sorrow and thanks those who walked with him in these 38 years, calling for understanding for the decision, adding that he had no alternative.

Abel Chivukuvuku said he will lead in the forthcoming elections set for 2012 a "broad citizens' movement" constituted and open to different political forces, renowned national and international entities of civic movement structured in Broad Convergence of National Salvation (House).

The first congress of the new political party will take place next April.
