UN chief for greater Angolan intervention in peacekeeping mission


Luanda - The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, defended on Monday in Luanda greater participation of Angola in peacekeeping forces of his organisation, as there are many operations in the Africa.


The UN top official said so while speaking to the State-owned newspaper of “Jornal de Angola”.


According to him, Angola can assist UN in terms of air capability and thus support these operations.


Ban Ki-moon said he discussed openly with the President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos on how Angola may contribute to its leadership, helping to solve the problems faced by the continent and how to participate peacekeeping and security mission.


According to Ban Ki-moon, the priority should go to the tackling of African matters so as to find solutions to eradicate poverty and ensure primary education, considered as pertinent issues included in the agenda of the major global challenges.


Ban Ki-moon also thanked Angola for strong support on his UN second term.


The UN Secretary General visited the country on 26 - 27 February at the invitation of the Angolan authorities.
 

During his visit, Ban Ki-moon met with president José Eduardo dos Santos, speaker of National Assembly, António Paulo Kassoma and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georges Chikoti.

 
The UN chief also met with representatives of the Angolan civil society and witnessed the launching of campaign aimed to fight against poliomyelitis, as well as visited new Kilamba town.
