Huambo - The visiting British MPs Wednesday in central Huambo province praised the demining operation being carried out by the Non-Governmental Organisation, “The Hallo Trust”, as it is freeing the lands from landmines and facilitating agriculture.
This was expressed by the head of the British Parliamentary delegation, Bruce Joseph Grocott, after visiting a landmine field in the locality of Tchicala Tcholohanga, where more than 1,809 anti-personnel, 34 anti-tank mines and other explosive devices have been cleared so far.
He pledged to encourage the UK Government to continue helping with the demining process, so the population can engage in agriculture to fight famine and poverty in Huambo.
The Hello Trust in Huambo has so far cleared more than 315 landmine fields and is still to clear another 70, in order for the whole region to become free from explosive devices.
The British Parliament team leader said his trip to Huambo was intended to learn about other regions of the country, adding he is impressed to have found a city with an acceptable level of growth after the war.
Bruce Joseph Gocott also expressed satisfaction at the investments in the farming sector in Huambo, and promised to appeal to UK Government to invest in the region.
In Huambo, the MPs delegation met with the local governor, Faustino Muteka, viewed the works of rehabilitation of Benguela Railway (CFB), the “Mukakava farm, the demining project and the central hospital.
In her turn, the head of the Angola Parliament delegation, Isabel Peliganga, said the visit was intended to show to the British MPs what the Government is doing in inland regions of the country, following the end of the war.
