Armed Forces tell people to report landmine areas

Ondjiva - The Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) called on the residents in suburban and rural zones for greater collaboration in denouncing of the areas suspect of  landmines.


The commander of De-mining Brigade attached to the Command of the Angolan Armed Forces in southern Cunene province, Lieut. Col. Jorge António, launched the appeal Friday in the provincial capital, Ondjiva.


According to the FAA high-ranking officer, the people's cooperation is priority in the exercise of landmine clearance. The citizens living in the referred zone know better the region and in the case of suspect of area with landmines or other explosive devices they should report to the local authorities.


Jorge António said that the de-mining brigade is involved in cleaning up and de-mining operations in Xangongo/Ondjiva stretch, an extension of 100 km.


Some 2,711 explosive devices have been deactivated and destroyed across the region in 2009, disclosed the local commander.
