Lubango – At least 10,604 explosive devices, including anti-tank projectiles, anti-personnel landmines, mortars, small calibre ammunition, hand and rifle grenades have been detected 14 kilometres of Lubango city, southern Cunene province.
The information was released Tuesday in Lubango by the acting provincial governor, Sérgio da Cunha Velho, at the end of a visit to the site, where members of the brigade of the National Demining Institute (INAD) are carrying out landmine clearance activity.
On the occasion, the official called for a speedier and more careful demining operation with a view to providing security in the area, where several private initiative projects are taking place and distribution of plots for the housing programme is being considered.
According to the source, the existence of powder magazines on the outskirts of Lubango poses an imminent danger to the population, reason why the Government promptly responded to a call to assign a brigade to clear the site.
On the other hand, the official spoke of the need for a campaign to awaken the local population to cooperate with INAD in demining operations and reporting to the authorities about strange objects they might come across in the region.
