Head of State highlights Ghana's role in Africa's liberation

Accra – The Angolan head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, Monday in Accra, highlighted the role played by Ghana in the liberation of the peoples of the continent.

According to José Eduardo dos Santos, who was speaking at the opening of official talks between ministerial delegations from both countries, Ghana was one of the pioneers, under president Kwame Nkrumah, in the battle for the complete liberation of Africa.

The other Ghanaian leaders, he underlined, followed the tradition and Angola also benefited from this aid and solidarity.

According to José Eduardo dos Santos, in the early days of the national liberation struggle, the motto was that no independent country would feel as such (independent), unless all the others were also free.

He thus underlined the fact that Ghana has an old tradition of solidarity with the peoples that fight for their liberation.

On the other hand, José Eduardo dos Santos thanked the political and material assistance extended to Angolan people towards its liberation and consolidation of independence.

The president stated that Angola and Ghana have a common journey as both want a totally free, peaceful and stable Africa, with conditions for progress and prosperity.

Dos Santos also highlighted the progress attained by Ghana in various fields and spoke of the need for a major exchange, including in sports.

"Ghana has an excellent national team of football, it has good football schools. With much pride to us all, it has been representing with dignity not only Ghana, but all African continent”, he stressed.

The Angolan head of State noted that Ghana has been mentioned by western countries as an example of democracy and economic and financial management.

"May you accept our congratulations on these great conquests of the people of Ghana and its Government”, he stated.

Under the 48-hour programme of visit to Ghana, José Eduardo dos Santos laid a wreath by the monument to Kwame Nkrumah, in Accra city centre.

On Tuesday, ministerial delegations are expected to complete official talks leading to the signing of two accords for permanent consultations and cooperation in the economic, technical and cultural fields between the two countries.
