Bangkok - Angola is attending the 122nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) opening Saturday in Bangkok, to discuss the participation of parliaments in reconciliation and good governance.
The Angolan parliamentary delegation to the event is headed by the first vice speaker of the National Assembly, João Lourenço.
The morning period was devoted to a women parliamentarian meeting that discussed gender violence issues.
At the 122the Assembly, the MPs are also expected to pay a special attention to cooperation and share responsibility in the fight against organised crime, including drugs trafficking, illegal sale of arms, human being trafficking and transfrontier terrorism.
The role of parliaments in the development of south-south cooperation, the participation of the youth in democratic processes, as well as reproductive and child health, will also be tackled at the meeting going until April 2.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union holds two assemblies per year. The first is held in the first semester in a member country, while the second takes place in the second half of the year, at the organisation’s headquarters, in Geneva, Switzerland.
IPU is an international organisation gathering sovereign States, with the purpose of mediating in parliament’s multilateral contacts.
Established in 1889, on an initiative of British William Randal Cremer and French Frédéric Passy, IPU seeks the settlement of conflicts through international arbitration.
