Catholic prelate defends fine for illegal possession of firearms

Luanda - Friar João Domingos defended last Friday in Luanda that fines should be given to citizens that insist on illegally keeping firearms in their possession.
 

Speaking to ANGOP, in the ambit of the world disarmament week, that happened from 24 to 30 October, the Catholic prelate suggested that the state should work on a stricter search in homes and those who are caught with a gun, without a licence, should be fined for not having handed it to the authorities.

 

“No-one has the right to have a gun at home for personal defence, putting public order at danger. It is necessary the collaboration of the population so that the disarmament programme be a success” he said.

 

In his opinion, crimes committed with use of firearms have visibly decreased since the start of the disarmament programme, thanks to the effort of the Angolan government to provide security to the communities.  
 

He reminded that the country experienced a war that lasted about 30 years, now that there is peace, everyone should contribute to the construction of a peaceful Angola.
