National Police discover powder magazine

Luanda – The National Police have discovered recently an idle powder magazine in eastern Moxico province, following operations in the framework of the ongoing process of disarmament of people in illegal possession of firearms.

The information was released Friday in Luanda to Angop by the deputy commander of the National Police, Paulo de Almeida, on the occasion of the World Disarmament Week, October 24-31.

According to the source, the said magazine contained 30 light firearms.

The officer said he believes there are many more such magazines needing to be dealt with.

The process of disarming citizens in illegal possession of firearms started in May 2008 and comprises four phases. They are "Organisation and sensitisation”, "Voluntary surrender”, "Coercive disarming” and “Control".

The National Commission for Disarmament was created with the purpose of reducing the proliferation of firearms, especially those illegally owned.
