Maputo - The head of the African Union observers mission to the general elections in Mozambique, Roberto de Almeida, has termed the October 28 poll as commendable.
The MP and vice-president of Angola's ruling MPLA party, in his capacity as former Angolan parliament speaker, headed the AU mission of observers made up by members of the Pan-African parliament, chairpersons of electoral commissions and representatives of the civil society which carried out their missions according to the AU guidelines for elections monitoring and observation missions (2002) and in respect for the Constitution and relevant laws of the Republic of Mozambique.
In a statement read by Roberto de Almeida, the AU mission praised the technical ability of the Mozambican electoral organs stressing that the Technical Secretariat of Electoral Administration (STAE) and the National Electoral Commission have good technical and organizational ability, made evident through the poll material distribution which has improved compared to 2004
"No doubt the result of this elections will translate the sovereign aspirations and willingness of Mozambican people" - reads the document.
