Kuito, – Two statues in honour of King Ndumduma shall be built this year by the Ministry of Culture in the Embala do Ecovongo region, 20 kilometres to the south of Kuito city, capital of southern Bié province.
This intention was assured on Monday in that locality by the incumbent minister, Rosa Cruz e Silva, during a meeting with the local population and traditional authorities, from whom she received testimonies on the deeds of King Ndumduma.
The official said that she received instructions from the Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, to recognise the country's historic figures and the regions of Ecovongo and Kuito were selected because that is where the king lived.
Rosa Cruz explained that the Angolan government desires that national citizens, especially children, learn about the various kingdoms that fought against the Portuguese colonial occupation forces, such as Bié, Bailundo, Congo, Ndongo, Matamba among others.
By intervening in the meeting, the municipal alderman of Kuito, Afonso Viti Wambembe, praised the central government's to build statues in honour of the kings, and added that this will enable research on those who contributed positively to the country.
The alderman reminded that, during the colonial conflict, the "Kingdom of Bié was the first to be prominent nationwide, as from the Embala do Ecovongo locality, a region where 23 chiefs governed.
On his turn, the historian Zeferino Calufenguengue explained that King Ndunduma resisted the Portuguese colonisation and was arrested after being betrayed by his wife Carolina Neyala on December 04, 1890 and deported to Mozambique where he died nine years later.
