Education Ministry urges investment in women's literacy

Luanda – The Ministry of Education called on Wednesday for the need to create conditions to invest more in  women’s literacy, as they are very important for the eradication of hunger, misery and thus improve people's living standards.

This exhortation was made on the occasion of the International Literacy Day, marked on September 8.

According to a press note from the Ministry of Education which reached ANGOP on Wednesday, in Luanda, the International Literacy Day in 2010 will be celebrated under the motto “The Key Role Played by Literacy for the Achievement of Women’s Autonomy”.

The communiqué also reads that the choice of this motto is on account of the fact that in the 21st century at least half of the illiterate population in the world are women.

Therefore, the Ministry of Education exhorts the society, international organisations, religious entities, NGOs and private sector to be part of a huge movement in Angola turned to literacy programmes, by investing in different existing initiatives.

Concerning the International Literacy Day, the Ministry of Education praises the initiative of the ruling MPLA party due to the programme dubbed “Let’s Learn”, by mobilising its basic structures in order to reinforce the fight against illiteracy.

The International Literacy Day was established by UNESCO in 1965.
