Geological study to determine country's potential

Luanda - The Ministry of Geology and Mining will carry out in the next five years a study in the whole country, to find about the potential of the national territory in terms of mineral resources, in the ambit of the National Plan on Geology, which was approved last Wednesday by the Angolan government.

Speaking to the press, after a Cabinet Council meeting, the minister of Geology and Mining, Mankenda Ambroise, said Angola is a potentially rich country, but it is necessary to implement a national programme that enables the exact knowledge of the type and location of mineral resources.

This Project, whose cost is estimated at USD 350 million, includes the construction of infrastructures like laboratories, and it will be implemented by stages.

According to the minister “the work is very ambitious, but feasible”, explaining that for the purpose of the study the national territory will be divided into four areas of intervention, to facilitate the study.

Mankenda Ambroise is of the opinion that the study is a valuable tool for the government to manage correctly its mineral resources.

“It is a task that will enable to open a new page, not only in the mining sector, but also in other areas that use the land (…)” explained the minister.

In the same meeting, the Cabinet also passed the strategic development plan of the Angolan Geological Institute, aiming to endowing the country with geological infrastructures that serve to obtain credible information that help to know and evaluate the minerals potential in the national territory.
