Luanda
Angola told to take advantage of scarce robusta coffee

Luanda – Angola should take advantage of the shortage of robusta coffee in the world market to relaunch production.

This was said Friday in Luanda by the secretary general of the Inter African Coffee Organisation (IACO), Josefa Correia Sacko.

Commenting on the organisation she leads and the current world financial crisis, Angolan Josefa Sacko told Angop that as robusta coffee is known and much appreciated in the world market, Angola should take advantage of its shortage to relaunch the sector.

For this reason, IACO secretary general recommended the National Institute of Coffee to release the results of the pilot project of rehabilitation of coffee going on in Angola’s central Kwanza Sul province.

"With the potential of our country, Angola could retrieve its position in the world market.

Today, with the drop in robusta coffee production in the African continent, Angola could take the second place in the group of robusta coffee growers, after Uganda”, she said.

According to the official, in 1988, with the fall of the quota system and elimination of the accord based on the International Coffee Organisation (ICO), prices dropped in the world market.

"Today the trend is different, prices have improved and the African continent is not taking advantage of the said improvements. Growers need to be trained in the domains of business techniques in order to become efficient and effective”, she stressed.
