18.0 billion dollars needed for energy sector

Luanda – At least 18.0 billion US dollars will be necessary until 2018, for investment in production, transportation and distribution of power, in order boost the country's industrialisation programme, on Wednesday here announced the Minister of State and Head of the Civil House of the President of the Republic, Carlos Maria Feijó.

The investments will be necessary taking into account the current challenges and the long term programme for the country's industrialisation, said the official during a press conference that aimed at balancing the three months of governance, after the approval of the Republic's Constitution.

To meet the immediate needs of Luanda city, he said, the government will construct, in Soyo village, northern Zaire Province, a power station, with the capacity of producing 400 megawatts.

Under the industrialisation programme, Carlos Feijó also said that Cambambe dam, in the northern Kwanza-Norte Province, will be enlarged, through the building of a second power station, which will enable to raise its production capacity to 700 megawatts, against the current 180 mw.

Taking into account the values for the materialisation of the general programme for the sector, the government will seek for the best financing (internal and external ones), in order not to put much pressure on the state budget.

Participants in the press conference were the ministers of state Helder Vieira Dias "Kopelipa" and Manuel Júnior, as well as the minister of Finance, Carlos Alberto Lopes, and the National Reserve Bank governor, Abraão Gourgel.
