Luanda – The Angolan minister of youth and sport, Gonçalves Muandumba, considered as ambitious for the development of chess the project of the candidate to the chair of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the Russian Anatoli Karpov.

The official said so during the meeting he held on Saturday in Luanda with Anatoli Karpov.

Anatoli Karpov is in Luanda since last Friday to present his project, as well as formalise his invitation to the Angolan Chess Federation (FAX) to be the vice chair of his bid at FIDE.

“It is a sign that Angola is doing something good for the development of sport and chess in particular”, said the minister.

According to him, chess has been contributing to the intellect and its practice reflects on school development.

Gonçalves Muandumba secured all support of the Angolan government to the FIDE chair candidate and Angola will contact some countries of the southern Africa region and the African Portuguese speaking nations (PALOP) for them to vote for Anatoli Karpov.

The ceremony was attended by the governor of Luanda, Francisca do Espírito Santo, sport deputy minister, Albino da Conceição and by the national sports director, among other members of the African chess federations in Luanda.
