Nigeria - The authorities of the Economic Community of West Africa States (Ecowas) Tuesday appealed to the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) to lift the suspension of Togo from two coming editions of the Africa Cup of Nations for having cancelled participation in the Orange Angola2010.
The Ecowas heads of State who held a one-day ordinary summit in Abuja, Nigeria, appealed to CAF to cancel Togo’s suspension, taking into account the African values of compassion and respect for mankind.
They also condemned the terrorist attack on Togo sport delegation by Angolan so-called Cabinda Enclave Liberation Front (FLEC) on the eve of the Orange2010.
The attack led Togo authorities into calling back the national team on allegation of lack of security.
According to a communique released at the end of the summit, the leaders assigned the president of Ecowas Commission, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, to discuss the matter with the West Africa Football Union (WAFU), with a view to seeking an urgent solution to the problem, thus enabling Togo to participate in the draw for the 2012 edition of the African Cup of Nations.
Earlier on, Chambas announced that consultations were underway with WAFU president and CAF vice president, Amos Adamu, for the two bodies to send a joint delegation to the meeting of African confederation Executive Committee on Friday, in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Togo has already appealed against CAF’s suspension and the Usd 50,000 fine.
The Togolese president, Faure Gnassingbe, is among the 10 heads of State who attended the Summit of Ecowas, a 15-member regional organisation.
