Luanda – The Angolan national and African judo champion (70 Kg) and golden medal in the Portuguese Speaking Community games of July this year in Portugal, Antónia de Fátima “Faya”, is considering to quit the sport, unless conditions to compete in international tournaments qualifying for the London Olympics Games of 2012 are put in place.
Speaking to Angop, the Santos FC athlete expressed discontent because she failed to compete in the Beijing Summer Games of 2008, due to the lack of required points and money as she remained out of competitions.
The athlete said she has been degraded and she seriously thinking over to stop competing at the highest level due to the lack of motivation.
To her, the sport authorities should take an action so that the country could be duly represented in the Olympic Games.
On the other hand, Faya was concerned about the lack of competition locally, predicting the extinction of judo in the future.
She justified her statement saying she only competed twice a year (provincial and national championships).
The athelete that became African champion in South Africa in 2005, added that the main motivation of any player is the competitions, adding that when there is no tournament, there is frustration that lead to quit.
Antónia de Fátima who start playing judo at Guedan school, has already competed in France, Germany, Portugal, Austria, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria, Senegal, Morocco, Cameroon, Mauritius, Niger and others, having been considered as the best player in her category in 2004 and 2005 by the African Judo Union.
The athlete is the main reference of judo in Angola.
