Namibe - The executive secretary of the UN convention to combat desertification (UNCCD), Luc Gnacadja, rejoiced with the tree plantation project in the municipality of Tombua, southern Namibe province.
Escorted around by the angolan environment minister, Fatima Jardim, the UN official visited the area where over 1,000 prosospolis trees are being planted under a program designed by the angolan government to combat desertification in Namibe province.
He said that UNCCD will support the project with means used to combat desertification all over the world, mainly with irrigation tools, which according tohim is the most important in the process.
He added that the first challange is to prevent the advancement of dunes to the fishing town of Tombua, as there are people ready to take part in the project and they deserve to be supported.
In Tombua, the UNCCD executive director visited the Forest Development Institute claiming for means to implement the project to combat desertification while in Namibe city Luc Gnacadja visited the wind break curtain project, started in October 2006, which expects the plantation of trees near the Yuri Gagarin airport in a 10 miles lenght and 50 meters width area.
