Cape Verde seeks cooperation in coastal management, environmental law

Luanda – The Republic of Cape Verde is interested in cooperating with Angola in coastal management and production of environmental legislation.

This was announced last Thursday, in Luanda, by the Cape Verdean minister of Environment, Rural Development and Sea Resources, José Maria Veigas.

The Cape Verdean official said so to the press at Luanda’s 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, at the end of his one-week visit to Angola.

The Cape Verdean official’s visit was mainly aimed for his participation in the activities in the ambit of the celebrations of one more anniversary of the National Environment Day, marked on 31 January, as well as the strengthening of the bilateral cooperation in various areas.

According to him, the need for re-launching the bilateral cooperation, starting with the two sectors mentioned above, is because these matters are related to environmental issues and they are more advanced in Angola, besides the cooperation that will be strengthened in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, staff training and other sectors.

Meanwhile, the official highlighted that his country also has some experiences to transmit to Angola and, therefore, the Cape Verdean minister invited the Angolan Environment minister, Fátima Jardim, to visit Cape Verde soon, so as to check the local reality and analyse ways to draft joint environmental projects.

During his stay in Angola, José Maria Viegas and his delegation met with the Angolan ministers of Agriculture, Justice and Fisheries, Pedro Canga, Guilhermina Prata and Salomão Xirimbinbi, respectively, as well as with the secretary general of the ruling MPLA party, Julião Mateus Paulo “Dino Matross”.

The minister also met with leaders of the Cape Verdean community in Angola.

In his second mission to Angola, José Maria Veigas received farewell greetings from his Angolan colleague, Fátima Jardim, and the Cape Verdean ambassador to Angola, Domingos Mascarenhas.

José Maria Viegas was accompanied by his advisor, Alcidio Tavares, and by the CEO of the Entrepreneurial Development Society, Ana Cristina Mendes.

Angola and Cape Verde have excellent relations of cooperation since the period of struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime and there are collaborations at various levels and sectors, both in the framework of the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community (CPLP) and in the ambit of the African Portuguese Speaking Countries (PALOP), with emphasis on the areas of defence and security, education, culture and transports.
