Guinea-Bissau - Iaia Djalo, who came fourth in the first round of Guinea-Bissau's presidential election, announced on Monday that he would supp ort Malam Bacai Sanha during the second round of the ballot on 26 July against Kumba Yala.

Djalo, the leader of the New Democracy Party (PND), an MP and former Foreign Affairs minister, is a dissident of the Social Reform Party (PRS) led by Kumba Yala.

In the first round of voting, Iaia Djalo got 10,495 votes (3.11%) and came fourth after Bacai Sanha, Kumba Yala and Henrique Rosa.

“Malam Bacai Sanha is the right man to execute the duties of Guinea-Bissau's president,” Djalo said in Bassau on Tuesday, adding that he would exhort all those who voted for him in the first ballot to join Malam Sanha so that he is elected on 26 July month.

In addition to Djalo, Malam Sanha already has the support of other candidates defeated in the first round, such as Luis Nancassa, Paulo Mendonça, Francisca Vaz Turpin "Zinha Vaz" and Braima Alfa Djalo.

In the first ballot, Malam Sanha, who is supported by the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), got 133,786 votes (39.59%), as against 99,428 votes (29.42%) for Kumba Yala who is the leader of the Social Reform Party (PRS).

The election campaign for the second ballot will end on 24 July.
