First Rwanda leader Mbonyumutwa 'must be exhumed'

KIigali- Rwandan officials have ordered the family of the country's first President, Dominique Mbonyumutwa, to exhume his remains.

The mayor of Muhanga district has given the family 60 days to decide where they want him re-buried.

Officials say they need the tomb moved to allow redevelopment.

Mr Mbonyumutwa's family said the government order contravened an earlier court ruling, which instructed the government to take care of the tomb.

Mr Mbonyumutwa became interim president in 1961 when Rwanda gained independence from Belgium.

He died in 1986.
