Luanda - The Constitutional Court's counsellor judge, Onofre dos Santos, Tuesday here highlighted the importance of this institution to guarantee a Lawful state in Angola, which is already being consolidated.
The counsellor judge made this statement at a panel dedicated to “the role of the Constitutional Court, particularly during the electoral process”, promoted by Angolan Bar Association (OAA) at "Maria do Carmo Medina" Auditorium of the Law Faculty of the Agostinho Neto University (UAN), in Luanda.
According to the magistrate, the Constitutional Court has the right to verify with anticipation the obeying of limitations included in the Angolan constitution, as well as guaranteeing that principles of independency, territorial integrity and of sovereignty are respected.
To Onofre dos Santos, this tribunal has the last word concerning law in Angola and secures the observation of the respect of principles, rights and duties of citizens.
The Constitutional Tribunal is made up of seven judges, three nominated by the Head of State, three by the Parliament, by a majority of two thirds of MPs and one elected by Supreme Court's Plenary.
At the moment following judges work at the institution: Rui Constantino da Cruz Ferreira (chief justice), Efigénia Mariquinha dos Santos Lima Clemente, Onofre António Alves Martins dos Santos, Agostinho António Santos, Luzia Bebiana de Almeida Sebastião, Maria Imaculada Lourenço da Conceição Neto and Miguel Correia.
