NAIROBI, 01/26 - The Kenyan new government supports the One China policy and appreciates the support extended to Kenya by the Chinese government, Kenya`s top diplomat said here Friday. "The bilateral relations between Kenya and China are cordial and strong," said Kenyan Foreign Affairs Minister Kalonzo Musyoka while meeting Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Du Qiwen. Kenya and China share common stand and views on many international issues, and Kenya will further enhance its cooperation with China in international affairs, he said. China is a developing country, but her economic, social and political development is tremendous, said the minister, hoping that China will share her technological and development expertise with African countries. On tourism, Musyoka said that he hoped the Chinese government will give Kenya approved tourist destination status to enable Kenya to tap the huge Chinese market. The minister also brief the ambassador on Kenya`s role in the Somalia and Sudan peace talks which are being held in Kenya, saying that Kenya believes in peaceful resolution of conflicts and regional integration. Du said that China and Kenya have maintained friendly cooperative ties since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1963, and such relations are continuing to expand, citing the fact that China hosted six high-powered ministerial visits from Kenya last year alone while quite a number of Chinese government delegations visited Kenya. The Chinese government has been funding many infrastructure projects in Kenya and it will continue to support Kenya`s development within its own financial capacity, said the ambassador. Du said that there is a great potential of economic cooperation between the two countries, which is evidenced by the continuous growth of bilateral trade volume. He also challenged Kenyan business people to tap the Chinese market. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, said Du, adding that the Chinese side will host a series of activities to commemorate this occasion. Musyoka appreciated the move by the Chinese side, pledging that Kenya will fully cooperate in the commemoration activities. In Kenya`s general elections last December, the National Rainbow Coalition headed by Mwai Kibaki won a landslide victory over the former ruling Kenya Africa National Union party. President Kibaki and his cabinet were sworn on Dec. 30 last year and Jan. 6 this year, respectively.
