Luanda - The International Women’s Health Day, a date that is celebrated Monday for the first time in Angola, since 1996 is referenced by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a day of action for sexual and reproductive rights of women.

According to deputy Health minister, Evelize Frestas, the origin of the celebration refers to 1987, when was held in Costa Rica, the Fifth International Women and Health meeting.

During this meeting were discussed issues related to death of women during pregnancy, delivery, after birth and those arising from unsafe abortions, an issue that remains valid and urgent, in most countries.

At the meeting held on May 28, about 80 women of various nationalities constituted that date as a day against maternal mortality.

In 1988 was started on May 28, the campaign to prevent maternal mortality, coordinated by the global network of women for reproductive rights and women’s health network of Latin American and Caribbean, which became known as the global health campaign of women and to combat maternal morbidity and mortality.
