According to SADC’s strategy draft, the organisation’s coming meetings will analyse proposals like the need to raise the awareness of citizens on the regional integration programme, strengthen decision-making and the national structures that promote the distribution and sharing of information among member states.
The SADC document states that about 19 per cent of the members countries read a newspaper at least once a week.
Although the data are not yet satisfactory, written press continues to be an important vehicle for information divulgence, especially in urban areas, reads the document.
In order to correspond to the challenges of the community, the region has been engaged in developing modern infrastructures to facilitate the communication among citizens.
Besides the written press, reads the strategy draft, private radio stations continue to grow and the use of African indigenous languages is taking ground.
